Stand-up paddleboarding by the sea: A new trend in Northern Cyprus
A new leisure hit on the coast of Girne
Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP for short, is becoming increasingly popular on the island. Recently, sports enthusiasts have been meeting at Antis Beach in Karaoğlanoğlu near Girne to enjoy this water sport together.
The offer is for beginners and advanced learners.
Beginner courses are regularly offered at Antis Beach, allowing interested individuals to gain their first experience. In addition, group trips are also available for experienced paddlers.
Out on the water at sunrise
One of the most popular activities is a sunrise paddle. Participants set off early in the morning from Antis Beach and paddle to the old port of Girne. This time, when the sea is particularly calm, offers a unique perspective of the coastline.
Discover Northern Cyprus from the water
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) offers the opportunity to experience the island from a new perspective. Bays, historic harbors, rocks, and stretches of coastline appear different from the water than from the land.
Attractive to locals and tourists alike.
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) appeals to people of all ages, as no professional athletic ability is required. Basic balance and swimming skills, along with a short introduction, are all that's needed. Holidaymakers take advantage of the opportunity to explore the island with SUP tours, especially at sunrise and sunset, offering a refreshing alternative to the traditional beach holiday.
Funding and events
The SUPKyrenia / Kyrenia SUP Sports Club is working to raise awareness of the sport. A paddle festival is planned for July, featuring events such as sunrise tours and parades. Part of the proceeds will go towards sea turtle conservation.
