Cockroaches in Cyprus: A practical summer guide

Introduction

During the summer months, cockroach activity increases significantly in Cyprus. Particularly in June, many homeowners contact pest control services, while newcomers are often surprised by the size and behavior of the insects. However, simple cleanliness and hiring exterminators are not always enough to keep these unwanted guests away.

What types of cockroaches are found in Cyprus?

In Cyprus, you mainly encounter three types of cockroaches:

  • American cockroach (Periplaneta americana): The largest species on the island, measuring 2.5 to 4 cm. It is reddish-brown in color, possesses fully developed wings, and is capable of short flights. It mostly lives outdoors, primarily in drainage systems and damp underground areas.
  • German cockroach (Blatella germanica): This species is significantly smaller, about 1.5 cm long, light brown with two parallel dark stripes on its back. Unlike the American species, it is purely a domestic pest, frequently found in kitchens and bathrooms, and nesting in electrical appliances and cupboards.
  • Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis): Measuring approximately 2.5 cm in length, it is characterized by a dark brown to almost black, glossy body. It is flightless and prefers cold, damp, and dark places.

Pest control statistics show that the American cockroach accounts for 60 to 70 percent of call-outs in the summer. This is due to the extensive root network of olive and citrus trees, which provides ideal breeding grounds. The German cockroach is responsible for about 25 percent of cases, and the Oriental cockroach for 5 to 10 percent.

Why do people react so strongly to cockroaches?

Although cockroaches neither bite nor sting and pose no direct threat to humans, the sight of them often triggers intense fear. The medical term for this phobia is katasaridaphobia. The main reasons for this are their unpredictable behavior and their need for cleanliness. The animals' quick, sudden movements can provoke startle reactions. Furthermore, they live in dirty environments and feed on decaying matter, which makes them appear as a symbol of contamination.

Why are cockroaches so common in Cyprus?

Cyprus's mild Mediterranean climate allows cockroaches to breed year-round. While cold winters reduce their populations in colder regions, the reproductive cycle in Cyprus slows only slightly and increases sharply in spring, reaching its peak in June when temperatures reach 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.

The natural environment, especially the numerous citrus and olive trees with their moist underground root systems, offers excellent habitats. While the soil dries out in summer and fallen fruit heats up, the cockroaches search for water sources, which often lead to houses via sewage and drainage systems.

Where are cockroaches most commonly found?

The distribution differs significantly between urban and rural areas. In larger cities like Limassol, an extensive, older network of sewers and drainage systems provides ideal conditions for the insects. During hot weather, the insects swarm from these pipes into the surrounding homes.

In contrast, areas like Latchi have smaller, localized sewage systems and an intact ecosystem with natural predators such as the Cypriot tarantula or larger lizards. These predators keep the cockroach population in check in the wild.

How can cockroaches be kept away permanently?

Cleaning alone and using sprays cannot always prevent cockroaches from entering living spaces. Physically blocking entry points is more effective. This includes sealing drains with fine-mesh screens or rubber stoppers. Equally important are intact door and window seals, as well as sealing gaps around doors and pipes to prevent the insects from getting in.

Furthermore, cardboard boxes are a frequently overlooked factor, as cockroaches prefer them due to their moisture-absorbing and hiding-friendly structure. Storage and shipping boxes can therefore bring these unwelcome guests into the house. Using plastic containers for storage and disposing of cardboard boxes immediately can prevent this.
