Bellapais Abbey
Bellapais Abbey is a Gothic monastery ruin in Bellapais (Beylerbeyi), about 6 kilometers southeast of Girne (Kyrenia). It stands on a rocky outcrop of the Kyrenia Mountains at an altitude of 220 meters.
Regular canons founded the monastery in the 13th century. The name "Bellapais" is a corruption of the French "Abbey de la Paix," meaning Abbey of Peace. Because of the white habits of the Premonstratensian monks, it was also called the "White Abbey." From the ruins, the view extends far down to Girne and out to the Mediterranean Sea.
