A trilingual commemorative album documenting the history and legacy of the Melkonian Educational Institute was unveiled at the Presidential Palace last week. The event honored the cultural heritage and educational work of the Armenian community in Cyprus.<\/p>\n
Published by the Press and Information Office, the book appears in Greek, Armenian, and English and was produced in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Office of the Armenian Religious Representative in Parliament. In nearly 400 pages, it traces the development of the institute from its founding by the brothers Krikor and Garabed Melkonian in 1926 until its closure in 2004. Originally established as a refuge for orphans of the Armenian Genocide, the institution evolved into a significant educational center for the Armenian diaspora.<\/p>\n
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou described the institution as a historical and moral symbol of recognition for Armenian culture and history. She stated that the institute serves as an example for the preservation of Armenian identity, language, and cultural traditions. Furthermore, she described it as a unique educational institution with international reach and a vibrant part of Cypriot life, underscoring the friendly relations between Cypriots and Armenians.<\/p>\n
The director of the Press and Information Office, Aliki Stylianou, emphasized that the commemorative album was more than just a publication: it was a symbol of remembrance and appreciation. She recalled that the institute was founded in a place that had always served as a refuge and a place of community. The Armenian representative in parliament, Vartkes Mahdessian, stressed the importance of the trilingual documentation and highlighted the contributions of former students and friends. Despite its closure, the institute's legacy remains alive, and there is hope for its reopening.<\/p>\n
During the event, Education Inspector Antonia Loizou presented the commemorative album. Musical contributions were provided by, among others, the Surp Asdvadzadzin Youth Choir and the Sipan dance group of the Hamazkayin Society.
